CAT 2020 - Introduction

  • Common Admission Test, popularly known as (CAT) is the largest MBA India Entrance Test conducted by IIMs. The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) started this exam and it's being an initial screening test offers a tough competition for admission in top B-schools which offer a very high package during placement
  • This computer-based test is conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) on a rotational basis for admission to their 2-year full-time postgraduate programs in management. It acts as a gateway to IIMs and 1200+ b schools all over India. Other Indian business schools like IITs, FMS, S P Jain, MDI, (number of private as well as government management institute) also accept CAT scores as part of their selection process
  • CAT has both MCQs as well as NON-MCQs questions as this exam is known for its unpredictable paper and pattern, but the trend shows that major sections are: Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation, Data Sufficiency, Logical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Verbal Ability
  • The duration of the test in 3 hours, allotting each section 1 hour, the screen won't be switched from each section. Negative marks are allotted for the wrong answer. Until CAT 2013, the CAT was held over a window of a couple of weeks in October/November. In CAT 2014, when TCS started conducting the test, the structure of the exam was changed, and the test window was reduced to two days. From 2015, CAT has become a one-day test and the same pattern has been followed since then
  • CAT 2020 exam will be conducted on 29th November 2020.

The CAT aspirants need to know the CAT paper pattern as it helps to devise personal test-taking strategies and techniques to crack the exam. There will be three sections that comprise of Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Aptitude. The total number of questions will be the same that is 100 and screening the previous year's question paper we can estimate that VARC -34, DILR -32, QA 34 will be the number of questions section-wise. CAT 2020 Percentile vs Marks

A stepwise method is followed to calculate the CAT percentile that includes the creation of scaled scores, followed by assigning sectional ranks and based on the criteria percentile scores candidates get their final ranks. Below is the table containing information of Percentile vs Marks for CAT 2019. This will help you get an idea of average marks required to score 99+ percentile

Percentile Overall (Scaled) Marks Verbal LR DI Quant
99 170+ 70+ 40+ 70+
98 160+ 67+ 38+ 67+
95 140+ 65+ 35+ 60+
90+ 120+ 55+ 30+ 50+
85+ 100+ 50+ 20+ 35+
80+ 90+ 45+ 20+ 30+

CAT 2020 Percentile Calculation Method

The steps described below are followed to calculate the CAT 2020 overall and sectional percentile scores obtained by a candidate.

While illustrating the percentile score calculation process, QA section is chosen as an example. A similar process is followed for the overall percentile score calculation and for the other two sections, i.e. DILR and VARC in CAT 2020.

The rank of a candidate can be predicated by CAT Rank Predictor, where one needs to fill appropriate eligibility status for various institutes. The marks can also be calculated through a Normalization Process. The steps described below are followed to calculate the CAT 2020 overall and sectional percentile scores obtained by a candidate.

While illustrating the percentile score calculation process, the QA section is chosen as an example. A similar process is followed for the overall percentile score calculation and the other two sections, i.e. DILR and VARC in CAT 2020

Step 1:
Calculate the total number of candidates (N) who appeared for CAT (i.e. including both morning and afternoon sessions).

Step 2:
Assign a rank (r), based on the scaled scores obtained in the QA section, to all candidates who appeared for CAT. In the case of two or more candidates obtaining identical scaled scores in the QA section, assign identical ranks to all those candidates.
As an illustration, suppose exactly two candidates obtain the highest scaled score in the QA section, then both of those candidates are assigned a rank of 1. Moreover, the candidate(s) obtaining the second highest scaled score in the QA section are assigned a rank of 3 and so on.

Step 3:
Calculate the percentile score (P) of a candidate with rank (r) in the QA section as:

P = (N-r)/N  x 100

Step 4:
Round off the calculated percentile score (P) of a candidate up to two decimal points.

For example, all percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.995 are rounded off to 100, all percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.985 but strictly less than 99.995 are rounded off to 99.99 and so on.

A methodology similar to the one described above is used for the computation of the overall CAT percentile scores and for the percentile scores of other sections.

CAT 2020 Cut Offs

  • The authorities that are conducting the exams will release the cut off for different categories after releasing the results of CAT 2020. The same process is followed after the second round as well and the cut off varies every year for every category
  • A candidate can expect the cut off to be released in November month through online mood
