CAT 2022 Exam Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must be eligible for the CAT Exam according to the CAT Exam Eligibility Criteria of 2022 in order to take it. Along with the CAT 2022 Notification, the official CAT 2022 Eligibility Criteria have been released:
- To be eligible for the CAT Exam, a candidate must have completed at least a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 50%. (for General Category and for candidates from the NC-OBC caste). The required percentage for SC/ST and Differently Abled (DA) candidates is 45 percent.
- The University that conferred the degree must be recognized by the MHRD in order for the degree to be counted.
- If the university gives grades or a CGPA instead of marks, the university’s conversion factor must be utilized. If the University does not provide a conversion factor, the CGPA must be converted to a percentage via direct conversion, which means dividing the CGPA received by the maximum CGPA possible and multiplying the result by 100.
- Candidates who have finished their professional degrees with a grade point average of at least 50% (45% for SC/ST/PwD) are also eligible to take the CAT.
Note: Candidates who are appearing for their final year in 2021 (graduating in 2021 or 2022) will be able to take the CAT 2021 if they received a promotion/pass certificate the previous year.
CAT Exam Eligibility for Final Year Students
The eligibility for the CAT Exam is a prevalent concern among final-year students wanting to take it. Students in their final year of all Bachelor’s degrees are welcome to take CAT as long as they clear their Bachelor’s with the required percentage (45 percent or 50 percent ).
If an applicant fails to pass their Bachelor’s degree with the required percentage, their results in subsequent admissions processes will be nullified.
Note: Candidates who are appearing for their final year in 2022 (graduating in 2022 or 2023) will be able to take the CAT 2022 if they received a promotion/pass certificate the previous year.
Key Points about CAT Exam Eligibility
- According to the CAT Exam Eligibility Criteria, there is no age limit on the CAT Exam.
- While the current qualifying criteria specify that the candidate must have a three-year bachelor’s degree, candidates with a two-year bachelor’s degree will be considered as long as the university is recognized by the UGC.
- The percentage of marks earned is computed in accordance with University policy.
- The candidate should keep a unique and valid email address as well as a phone number for official correspondence during the admissions process at IIMs.
CAT Exam Eligibility: Factors which Disqualify a Candidate
- If the candidate has not yet completed their bachelor’s degree and is working on their professional degree (CA/CS/ICWA).
- If the candidate is working on both a bachelor’s degree and a professional degree but has not yet completed both.
- If the candidate’s degree is not recognized by the UGC/AICTE/MHRD, he or she will be disqualified to take the CAT Exam.
CAT 2022/2023 Exam Eligibility Criteria:
Registration with Backlogs
One of the most common queries of students with academic backlogs in their graduate program is whether they can enroll for the CAT 2022 Exam or not.
The answer to this question is yes, a student can apply and register for CAT without any problem. It has been clarified that CAT aspirants who have academic backlogs during their graduate program can register for CAT. Any candidate who scores above 50% (45% for the reserved category) in the degree can apply for CAT 2022. When asked, “Are you in your final year of your bachelor’s degree?” while filling out the CAT 2022 registration form, select “Yes” among the options.
Paper Pattern for CAT 2022/2023
The exam pattern for CAT has been changed several times in the past years by conducting IIMs.
But it seems like exam pattern introduced in 2015 will continue in CAT 2020 as well, concerning the total marks, duration, and total questions, keeping the basic preparation for the CAT exam the same as earlier barring some changes in the topic-wise distribution of questions. The CAT aspirants need to know the CAT paper pattern as it helps to devise personal test-taking strategies and techniques to crack the exam.
There will be three sections that comprise of Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Aptitude.
The total number of questions will be the same that is 100 and screening the previous year’s question paper we can estimate that VARC -24, DILR -20, QA – 22 will be the number of questions section-wise. Paper will comprise of MCQs and Non-MCQs questions making the paper a of total 198 marks. Each question will be awarded 3 marks for the right answer and a negative marking of 1 will be for each wrong answer. No negative marking will be there for Non-MCQ questions. Here, the latest exam pattern followed by CAT 2021, which can help the CAT 2022 aspirants to get acquainted with the latest pattern and prepare accordingly.
Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension Section: CAT 2022/23
The CAT Exam Pattern of the last 2-3 years indicates that this section consists of two main components:
- Reading Comprehension, and
- Verbal Ability
Many candidates were thwarted by the difficulty level of this section in CAT 2021 which should be a warning for CAT 2022 aspirants. VARC should not be overlooked based on the less challenging difficulty level in some of the previous years.
- Accounts for ⅔ rd of the questions in the VARC section. (16 questions out of 24)
- Question Format: MCQs with a few TITA (Type in the Answer) type questions
- There are usually 4 – 5 passages in this section (2 – 3 longer ones while 2 – 3 shorter ones)
- Comparatively shorter subsection with around 8 – 10 questions.
- The CAT 2022 Exam Pattern and Syllabus for this section will mainly comprise:
- Para Summary
- Cloze Passage
- Picking the odd sentence out
- Grammar-based or logic-based
- Sentence and contextual usage
- Analogies and reverse analogies
- Sentence Correction
- Idioms and Phrases
- Vocabulary-based questions- Antonyms, homonyms, metaphors, etc.
- Facts and inferences.
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning Section: CAT 2022/23
DILR has been the most complicated section according to the CAT Exam Pattern for the last 4 – 5 years. As the name suggests, this section comprises two parts:
- Data Interpretation
- Logical Reasoning
Data Interpretation Section:
- Comprises two sets that individually have 4 to 6 questions each.
- These questions can be based directly on data extracted from tables/graphs shown in the set or may require further calculation or interpretation of the data.
- Includes MCQs and TITA Questions with most likely to have 3 MCQs and 1 TITA Question per set.
Logical Reasoning Section:
- Probably has 2 – 3 distinct sets based on Blood Relations, Arrangements, and combinations of topics
- There is a combination of MCQs and TITA questions such that one TITA question is part of each set.
This section usually bamboozles the candidates. But, getting a high percentile in this section can be relatively easy as the aspirant only needs to solve 10 – 12 questions correctly to break into the 99%ile bracket. Such has been the CAT Exam Pattern for at least the last 2 – 3 years. However, the effort required to break down each set before solving the questions means that most people stumble with time while solving this section.
NOTE: – Another vital factor that each candidate must remember is the proper selection of questions and sets. As this section is relatively challenging and consumes a lot of time to organize the data, the number of questions that each candidate can attempt is limited, and wasting time on the wrong ones can lead to not-so-good outcomes in this section.
Quantitative Aptitude: CAT 2022/23
The section that most candidates prepare for the most because the CAT Exam Pattern and Syllabus for this section is the most intensified among all the others.
This section of the exam can play havoc on most aspirants. It consisted of 22 Questions with around 7 – 8 Non-MCQs in CAT 2021. There is no specific division among topics that carry higher weightage compared to the other subsections. Thus, candidates have to go through the entire Syllabus to be confident of scoring well in this section.
The CAT 2022 Exam Pattern and Syllabus for the Quantitative Aptitude section consist of:
- Number Systems
- HCF, LCM & Divisibility
- Percentage, Profit & Loss
- Simple and Compound Interest
- Time, Speed, & Distance
- Time & Work, Pipes & Cistern
- Ratio, Proportion & Partnership
- Mixtures, Allegations, Averages & Ages
- Linear & Quadratic Equations
- Surds & Indices
- Set Theory/ Venn Diagram
- Permutation, Combination & Probability
- Geometry and Mensuration
In the past, the CAT was renowned for its challenging QA section until recently, when the IIMs reduced the difficulty level to accommodate non-engineers. Furthermore, this has also led to higher scores and cut-offs in this section. The questions have been easy in terms of difficulty and are blended well throughout.

CAT Percentile Calculation Method
The steps described below are followed to calculate the CAT overall and sectional percentile scores obtained by a candidate.
While illustrating the percentile score calculation process, QA section is chosen as an example. A similar process is followed for the overall percentile score calculation and for the other two sections, i.e. DILR and VARC in CAT.
The rank of a candidate can be predicated by CAT Rank Predictor, where one needs to fill appropriate eligibility status for various institutes. The marks can also be calculated through a Normalization Process. The steps described below are followed to calculate the CAT overall and sectional percentile scores obtained by a candidate.
Calculate the total number of candidates (N) who appeared for CAT (i.e. including both morning and afternoon sessions).
Assign a rank (r), based on the scaled scores obtained in the QA section, to all candidates who appeared for CAT. In the case of two or more candidates obtaining identical scaled scores in the QA section, assign identical ranks to all those candidates.
As an illustration, suppose exactly two candidates obtain the highest scaled score in the QA section, then both of those candidates are assigned a rank of 1. Moreover, the candidate(s) obtaining the second highest scaled score in the QA section are assigned a rank of 3 and so on.
Calculate the percentile score (P) of a candidate with rank (r) in the QA section as:
P = (N-r)/N x 100
Round off the calculated percentile score (P) of a candidate up to two decimal points.
For example, all percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.995 are rounded off to 100, all percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.985 but strictly less than 99.995 are rounded off to 99.99 and so on.
A methodology similar to the one described above is used for the computation of the overall CAT percentile scores and for the percentile scores of other sections.

CAT 2022/2023 Admission Process
It should be mentioned that each IIM selects candidates for the second stage of the selection process on its own.
A Written Ability Test (WAT) and a Personal Interview are part of the selection procedure (PI). Individual success on the CAT 2022 exam will play a significant role in the overall selection process. When shortlisting and ranking individuals at various stages during the admission process, IIMs also take into account their previous academic records, relevant work experience, and other similar factors. Across IIMs, the methods, academic cut-offs, and weights assigned to the evaluation parameters may differ.
