1. World's First commercial electric plane takes flight in Canada 

  • The world's first fully-electric commercial aircraft took its inaugural test flight, taking off from the Canadian city of Vancouver and flying for 15 minutes.
  • A 62-year-old six-passenger DHC-2 de Havilland Beaver seaplane re-fitted with a fully electric 750 horsepower motor was piloted by Greg McDougall, founder and chief executive of Harbour Air, a British Columbia-based charter airline that transport passengers between Vancouver.
  • MagniX designed the motor and worked in partnership with Harbour Air which ferries thousands of people a year between Vancouver, Whistler ski resort and nearby islands.

2. US, Mexico, Canada sign USMCA trade deal

5. National Tribal Dance Festival to be held in Raipur

6. FASTags becomes mandatory for all vehicles from 15th December 2019

  • FASTags or prepaid rechargeable tags for toll collection have become mandatory for all vehicles from 15th December 2019.
  • The FASTags or prepaid rechargeable tags allows automatic payment of toll. The government launched the National Electronic Toll Collection System which provides for the collection of user fee through FASTag to save fuel and time, curb pollution and ensure seamless movement of traffic.
  • National Highways Authority of India has equipped all fee plazas with Electronic Toll Collection System.
  • With the help of a FASTag, drivers will not have to stop their vehicles at toll plazas to pay tax.
  • A FASTag uses radio frequency identification technology to enable direct toll payments from a moving vehicle.

7. Bureau of Energy Efficiency organises 29th National Energy Conservation Awards

  • Bureau of Energy Efficiency has organised the "29th National Energy Conservation Awards" under the guidance of Ministry of Power, Government of India.
  • India celebrates the National Energy Conservation Day every year on 14th December to recognise and celebrate the efforts towards energy conservation.

1. Odisha to set up 45 new fast track courts 

  • 45 new fast track courts will be set up in Odisha. The 21 courts would be dedicated to cases of rape and sexual harassment of women.
  • The remaining 24 fast track courts will specifically deal with Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases.
  • The State government's action comes after Centre's decision to formulate a scheme for setting up 1,023 fast track special courts for expeditious trial and disposal of rape cases.

2. Andhra Pradesh Cabinet approves Disha Bill 2019

  • The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet approves the A.P. Disha Bill, 2019 (A.P. Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2019) paving the way for awarding the death penalty for the offences of rape and gang-rape and expediting the verdict in trials of such cases to 21 days.
  • The Cabinet also gave its nod for introduction of the A.P. Special Court for Specified Offences against Women and Children Bill, 2019, for dealing with offences against women and children, including rape and gang-rape, acid attacks, stalking, voyeurism, sexual harassment and cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

3. Virtual Police Station inaugurated at Andhra University

  • The Cell will advise, mentor, plan and monitor the mitigation measures taken by the coal companies for maximizing the utilization of available resources in a sustainable way, minimizing the adverse impact of mining and mitigating it for further eco-system services.

6. Gurgaon-based startup won 'Space Oscar' award 

  • The Gurugram-based startup blue Sky Analytics has created an application called 'Zuri' that won the Copernicus Masters Award also called Space Oscars, under the Social Entrepreneurship category.
  • The award was given by the Earth observation program managed by the European Commission (EU) in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA).
  • The application uses satellite data to provide improved monitoring, supply chain and pricing analysis as well as the allocation of crop waste to be used as raw materials in other industries.
  • The application includes an AI (Artificial Intelligence)- based tool to measure and monitor farm fires and stubble burning across India, million tons of crops are being burnt in India on farms to clear the field for new crops every winter, as a result releasing massive amounts of greenhouse gases which have led to increased level of pollution in New Delhi and other parts of the country.

  • The ETF is a government initiative and Edelweiss AMC was given the mandate to design and manage the product.

1. India among top 10 countries with higher climate performance 

  • India, for the first time, ranks among the top 10 in this year's Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) at the COP25 climate summit in the Spanish capital Madrid.
  • The current levels of per capita emissions and energy use in India ranked 9th in the high category showing that emissions are still comparatively low.
  • However, despite a high rating for its Climate Policy performance, experts point out that India has yet to develop a roadmap to phase-out fossil fuel subsidies and reduce the country's high dependence on coal.
  • The authors of the report noted that while the country receives an overall medium rating in the renewable energy category, India's 2030 renewable energy target is rated very high for its well-below 2 degrees Celsius compatibility.
  • They noted that as none of the countries assessed is already on a path compatible with the Paris climate targets, the first three places of the ranking remain unoccupied.
  • While some EU countries such as Sweden (4th) and Denmark (5th), one of the best climbers, achieve overall high or very high ratings, the performance of EU countries varies largely.
  • While only two G20 countries, the UK (7th) and India (9th), are ranked in the high category, eight G20 countries are remaining in the worst category of the index.
  • Australia (56th out of 61), Saudi Arabia and above all the US perform particularly poor.
  • The index is jointly presented by Germanwatch, NewClimate Institute and Climate Action Network.
  • China, the largest global emitter slightly improves its ranking in the index to 30th place.

2. India ranks 129th in Human Development Index 2019

  • India has been ranked 129th among 189 countries in the Human Development Index 2019 released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
  • India was ranked 130th last year in the index. Norway, Switzerland, Ireland occupied the top three positions in the index.
  • According to the report, South Asia was the fastest growing region in human development progress showing a 46% growth over 1990-2018, followed by East Asia and the Pacific at 43%.

  • India's HDI value increased from 0.431 to 0.647, which places it above the average for countries in the medium human development group (0.634) and above the average for other South Asian countries (0.642).
  • In the Inequality-adjusted HDI (IHDI), India was ranked 130th, losing nearly half the progress (0.647 to 0.477) made in the past 30 years.
  • The IHDI indicates percentage loss in HDI due to inequalities. In the Gender Inequality Index (GII), India is at 122 out of 162 countries.
  • The Human Development Index measures average achievement of the countries in 3 basic dimensions of human development i.e. life expectancy, education and per capita income.

3. Nirmala Sitharaman 34th among world's 100 most powerful women: Forbes

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has been ranked 34th by Forbes in ˜The World's 100 Most Powerful Women'. HCL Corporation CEO and Executive Director Roshni Nadar Malhotra and Biocon Founder Kiran Mazumdar Shaw are two other Indians who also featured in the above list.
  • The Forbes 2019 list of ˜The World's 100 Most Powerful Women' has been topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, followed by President of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde in the 2nd spot and Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, ranked 3rd.

1. Puducherry government unveils start-up policy

3. Suniel Shetty signed as anti-doping brand ambassador NADA 

  • Actor Suniel Shetty has been selected as the brand ambassador of National Anti-Doping Agency NADA.
  • The country's anti-doping body is hoping that his celebrity status helps its efforts to clean up sports in the country from the menace.
  • More than 150 athletes have failed dope tests this year though bodybuilders make up more than one-third of these offenders.
  • This is not a welcome sign with less than eight months to go for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
  • The suspension of National Anti-Doping Laboratory by the WADA earlier this year is another issue facing the country now that dope samples collected by the National Anti-Doping Agency from the athletes will have to be tested outside India.

4. 13th South Asian Games concluded in Nepal 

  • The 13th South Asian Games concluded in Nepal. India finished on top with 312 medals comprising 174 gold, 93 silver and 45 bronze.
  • Host Nepal remained second and Sri Lanka got third place. During the 10 days long biggest sporting event of South Asia, over 2700 athletes from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Maldives competed for 1119 medals.

5. GS Lakshmi to become 1st Woman Match Referee to officiate men's ODI match 

  • Indian match referee GS Lakshmi is set to become the first woman match referee to officiate a men's ODI match.
  • She will oversee the third series of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2.
  • The opening match of the competition will take place between the United Arab Emirates and the United States of America at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
  • Earlier in May 2019, she also became the first woman to get appointed onto the ICC International Panel of Match Referees.
  • Lakshmi has the experience of officiating in three women's ODI matches, 16 men's T20Is and seven women's T20Is

6. FIH unveils new world ranking system for 2020 

  • The International Hockey Federation unveiled a new world ranking system for 2020 in Lausanne, Switzerland. The new method will come into effect from the 1st January 2020.
  • The new ranking will be match-based instead of tournament-based calculation.
  • The new model is expected to remove the subjectivity surrounding continental weighing by creating a system which is fair to all. The outgoing world ranking system was in existence since 2003. It was originally devised to allocate teams into pools at tournaments.

7. Rohit Sharma becomes brand ambassador of La Liga in India 

  • The top tier of Spanish club football "La Liga" has announced cricketer Rohit Sharma as its brand ambassador in India.
    Rohit Sharma is the first non-footballer in the 90 year-old history of the league to have become a brand ambassador.
    The top tier of Spanish club football has been ramping up its fan base in India through a series of initiatives. These initiatives includes grassroot development programme like La Liga Football Schools and a digital broadcast deal with Facebook.

  • Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Girish Chandra Murmu inaugurated the 72-metre long Multi Cell Box Type Load Class 70 bridge to the Nation in Rajouri.

  • There are 38 World Heritage Sites in India, out of which 22 Cultural Sites including monuments/ buildings and caves are under the protection of Archaeological Survey of India.

3. PUMA signs Sunil Chhetri as brand ambassador

  • Indian men's football team captain Sunil Chhetri has signed a 3-year deal with PUMA.

  • PepsiCo has appointed actor Salman Khan as the new brand ambassador of its flagship Pepsi brand of carbonated beverage in India.
  • Brand Pepsi will base its summer 2020 campaign on Salman Khan's upcoming movie "Dabangg-3".
  • PepsiCo India will launch a 360 degree campaign to leverage the new association.

5. Amazon's Audible launches app "Audible Suno" in India

  • Amazon's audiobook company Audible has launched a new app "Audible Suno" in India. This app features original audio series which aims to expand Audible's reach in India's highly competitive digital entertainment and streaming space.
    The platform features hundreds of hours of Audible's original audio series across a plethora of genres, steered by entertainers such as Amitabh Bachchan, Nawaazuddin Siddiqui, Anurag Kashyap, Tabu, Neena Gupta and Vir Das.

6. Google Earth covers 98 percent of entire population

  • Search engine giant Google has revealed that it's powerful mapping service, Google Earth now covers more than 98 per cent of the world, and has captured 10 million miles of Street View imagery, a distance that could circle the globe more than 400 times.
  • Google Earth, the software that lets you browse the globe with 3D representation, right from the comfort of your couch, offers 6 million square miles of high definition satellite images, covering more than 98 per cent of the entire population.
