As many as 125 people were killed in stampede following a football match in Malang city of East Java province in Indonesia on October 2. Fans rushed onto the pitch after their home team lost. Police responded by firing tear gas causing stampede at the exits. - BRAZIL
Former President leftist Luiz Inácio ‘Lula’ da Silva will face far-right incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro in in a run-off vote on 30 October after none of the candidates got 50% of votes needed to win the October 2 election outright. Lula won 47.85% of votes while Bolsonaro trailed behind with 43.7%. - VENEZUELA
Venezuela has freed seven jailed Americans in exchange for the release of two relatives of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the two countries confirmed on October 2. The swap included five American oil executives. The Americans were exchanged for two of Maduro’s wife’s nephews, who were serving 18-year sentences in the US on drug charges. - RUSSIA
An explosion caused the partial collapse of the bridge linking the Crimean Peninsula with mainland Russia on October 8. Three people died. The 19-km bridge across the Kerch Strait links the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and is the longest in Europe. - UKRAINE
Russia withdrew its troops from the strategic Ukrainian town of Lyman on October 1, in a move seen as a significant setback for its campaign in the east. The retreat came amid fears thousands of soldiers would be encircled in the town, Russia’s defence ministry said. Recapturing Lyman could let Ukrainian soldiers reach more contested territory in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. - UK
Liverpool in England was chosen to host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest on October 8. The show will be held in United Kingdom after this year’s winner, Ukraine, was unable to take up hosting duties due to the war. - GERMANY

A roadside bomb killed three United Nations peacekeepers from Bangladesh and injured several others in the northwestern Central African Republic on October 3. A global alert has been issued over four cough syrups after the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on October 7, 2022 they could be linked to the deaths of 66 children in The Gambia. The products were manufactured by an Indian company, Maiden Pharmaceuticals. - BURKINA FASO
Captain Ibrahim Traore was on October 6 appointed as president of West African nation Burkina Faso after Paul-Henri Damiba was removed in the West African country’s second military coup in less than nine months. The country plunged into political turmoil on September 30 after a group of officers decided to remove Damiba.
