    EU Commission, the executive arm of the European Union (EU), recommended that Ukraine be granted candidate status to one day join the 27-nation bloc. Candidate status is a significant step to joining the EU. However, the whole process can take many years.
  • UKRAINE
    All bridges to the embattled Ukrainian city of Sievierodonetsk have now been destroyed. Fierce fighting is taking place in the eastern city where Ukrainian officials said Russian artillery had driven its forces out of the centre.
  • GERMANY
    Russian state-controlled gas giant Gazprom said it was limiting the amount of gas to Germany to under 70 million cubic metres per day – well under half the current rate. The reason it gave was to service equipment in the Nord Stream pipeline.
  • ISRAEL
    Egypt, Israel and the European Union have signed a provisional deal for the export of natural gas aimed at lessening the EU’s reliance on gas from Russia. The Israeli gas is expected to be sent to liquefaction plants in Egypt and then shipped north to markets in Europe.

  • NAMIBIA
    Namibia’s environment and tourism ministry said it has discovered the carcasses of 11 rhinos killed by suspected poachers in the Etosha National Park since the beginning of the June.
  • CHINA
    China has officially launched its third aircraft carrier, naming the vessel the Fujian. The People’s Liberation Army Navy already has two fully-functioning aircraft carriers, Shandong and Liaoning.
  • KENYA
    Kenya’s Norah Magero was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. Her winning invention is a small, portable, solar-powered fridge, named Vaccibox, that safely stores and transports vaccines.
  • MONGOLIA
    Mongolia’s Khuvsgul Lake National Park has been added to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO. Khuvsgul Lake holds 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water, or 0.4% of the world’s total.
  • UK
    The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) grounded the first flight from UK deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda. On June 15, the ECHR issued last-minute injunctions to stop the deportation of the handful of migrants on board.
  • US
    The British government has approved the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States to face criminal charges, bringing his long-running legal saga closer to a conclusion. Assange is wanted by US authorities on 18 counts, including a spying charge.
